Dental plaque

Dental plaque is one of the most common causes of cavities and periodontium diseases. The plaque consists of a large number of bacteria combined in a mucopolysaccharide matrix and it cannot be washed, but it can be mechanically removed with a toothbrush. Its main property is adhesion to the tooth’s surface, and already a few minutes after polishing, it starts forming again from the saliva in the form of a very thin layer covering the teeth. The bacteria then produce acids which damage the enamel’s surface and create whiteish stains which are the first sign of cavity development. When calcium from the saliva starts accumulating on the dental plaque, it forms calculus, the main cause of periodontal disease. Regular maintenance of oral hygiene can significantly affect the appearance of dental plaque. By brushing your teeth minimum twice a day and using a mouthwash, you contribute not only to the health of your teeth and mouth, but of your whole body as well.
