Apart from dental hygiene, which is our own responsibility, there are certain measures which can only be performed by a dentist. One of them is preventive sealing of tooth fissures. On the biting surfaces of premolars and molars (numbers 4, 5 and 6), especially in children and young persons, there are numerous, finely shaped and diversely positioned pits, grooves and dents, which together make up the fissure system. The deepest parts of those fissures are often, due to their dimensions and shapes, hard to reach with a toothbrush, which makes them ideal for accumulation of food remains and bacteria, and thereby an exceptionally suitable location for the formation of cavities. To prevent the formation of cavities in those places, dentists perform a procedure called dental fissure sealing.
\nThe procedure is simple and painless, it does not require physical removal of hard tooth tissues (tooth drilling), or an anaesthesia. Teeth are first thoroughly cleaned with a round rotating brush and a special toothpaste to remove all impurities, and then a mild acid, the acidity of which is similar to lemon juice, is applied onto the biting surface. This acid makes the tooth\u2019s surface rough so the sealing material would better adhere to it. After the acid is left on the tooth for 30 seconds, it is washed with water and the tooth is carefully dried. The sealing material is poured onto the dried biting surface of the tooth which relatively easily penetrates into all pits, dents and grooves. Finally, the sealing material is illuminated with the polymerization lamp light. After fissure sealing, the patient can immediately eat and drink.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
