Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of diseases and injuries of the inside of the tooth (the endodontium). Dental pulp diseases are most often the result of tooth decay, that is, destruction of the hard tooth tissue down to the pulp.
Dental pulp diseases can be treated in two ways:
- treating the disease while preserving the dental pulp, which is mostly achieved with certain medications
- removing the dental pulp (removing the nerve), properly cleaning and shaping the root canals, and then filling them
