Orthodontics is a clinical specialty of dentistry that deals with the growth, development and maintenance of the dentofacial complex, and with the study of developmental disorders and all the causes that can lead to malocclusion (an incorrect or poor bite). Malocclusion can cause speech difficulties and premature wear of the teeth and their protective enamel, and it increases the risk of dental and jaw joint disease.
Orthodontic irregularities are mostly treated with orthodontic appliances (braces), which apply gentle pressure to the teeth and move them into correct alignment. Depending on the type of treatment, the appliances are either removable or fixed.
