Implantology (oral implantology) is a branch of dentistry that deals with the placement of dental implants. A dental implant is placed in the jaw and, after some time, forms a firm bond with the bone. A crown is then placed on the implant, and implants can also serve as supports for a bridge or anchors for a denture.
Dental implants offer several advantages over other ways of replacing teeth:
- they look and function like natural teeth
- they replace teeth without sacrificing the neighbouring ones, which have to be ground down when a single tooth is replaced with a bridge
- they help preserve the alveolar ridge (the ridge does not resorb)
Modern dental implants are made of pure titanium, a biocompatible material that does not cause allergic reactions, so the body accepts them well. At our office, we work with implants from renowned manufacturers such as Straumann, Zimmer, Nobel and ICX.
